Honouring a Legend: A Tribute to Hugh Masekela at the Joburg Theatre

On the 9th of April, the stage at the Joburg Theatre came alive in celebration of one of South Africa’s greatest musical icons — Hugh Masekela. The tribute concert was more than just a performance; it was a heartfelt homage to a man whose music shaped generations and carried the spirit of a nation.

From the moment the show began, there was a deep sense of respect in the room. You could feel that this wasn’t just about performing songs — it was about preserving a legacy. Masekela’s music is rich with history, emotion, and storytelling, and the artists on stage took on the responsibility of bringing that to life in their own ways.

One of the standout performances of the night, for me, came from Zoe Modiga. Her performance was nothing short of exceptional. You could immediately tell that she had done her homework — not just vocally, but emotionally and artistically. She managed to take Hugh’s songs and make them her own, while still preserving the essence of who he was. That balance is not easy to achieve, but she executed it with grace and authenticity.

What stood out even more was the level of respect she showed for her craft. Every note felt intentional, every moment carefully considered. It wasn’t just a performance — it was an interpretation rooted in understanding. Shout out to her for that, because it truly elevated the experience.

The rest of the performers also brought strong energy to the stage, each contributing to the overall tribute in their own unique way. The night flowed beautifully, with moments of nostalgia, celebration, and reflection. However, if I’m being honest, Tresor’s performance didn’t quite hit the mark for me. It felt slightly underprepared, almost as if it hadn’t been fully rehearsed. While the intention was there, the execution lacked the polish that the rest of the show carried.

That said, it didn’t take away too much from the overall experience.

The tribute as a whole was beautiful. It was a reminder of the impact Hugh Masekela had, not just as a musician, but as a storyteller and cultural icon. Moments like these bring people together, allowing us to reflect on the legacy he left behind and the influence he continues to have on artists today.

I’m sure, wherever he is, the legend was smiling, seeing his music continue to live on through new voices and interpretations.

Overall, I’d give the show a 7/10 — a meaningful and enjoyable tribute with standout moments that honoured a true giant of South African music.
