From the 20th of February until the 1st of March, audiences were treated to a beautiful musical experience with Ode to Motown, a production that celebrated the timeless sound and legacy of Motown. Hosted at the iconic Joburg Theatre, the show brought together powerful voices and passionate performers who paid tribute to one of the most influential sounds in music history.
Walking into the theatre, you could immediately feel the excitement in the room. There was a sense of anticipation as people gathered to relive some of the classic songs that have shaped generations. Motown music has always carried a special kind of magic — it blends soul, rhythm, emotion, and storytelling in a way that connects people across ages and backgrounds.
What stood out the most for me was seeing experienced vocalists from the industry stepping into the theatre space and truly owning the stage. Theatre requires a different level of performance — it’s not just about singing well, but about presence, storytelling, and connecting with the audience in a deeper way. It was beautiful to witness these artists embrace that challenge and deliver strong, heartfelt performances.
The vocals throughout the show were impressive, with each singer bringing their own interpretation and personality to the Motown classics. The harmonies, the stage presence, and the overall musical arrangement worked together to create a warm and nostalgic atmosphere. You could see how much respect the performers had for the music they were celebrating.
Another highlight was the audience’s response. People were clearly enjoying themselves — singing along, clapping to the rhythm, and fully immersing themselves in the experience. Motown has that timeless ability to make people feel good, and this production definitely captured that spirit.
Overall, Ode to Motown was a wonderful musical experience that celebrated both legendary music and the talent of the performers bringing it to life on stage. It was a great reminder of how powerful live music and theatre can be when they come together.
All in all, I would give the show a 7/10 — a solid and enjoyable production that honoured the Motown legacy while giving audiences a night of soulful entertainment.
